PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team had three scorers in double-figures, but it was not enough as five Golden Rams players scored in double figures to hand the host Lightning (0-3) a 72-60 loss on Tues. night at the Jones Center.
Redshirt-sophomore guard Jacinda Jones followed up her 30-point performance on Sat. with 10 points, two assists and two blocks. Junior guard Janae Weldon led the Lightning with 12 points and three assists. Freshman guard Ashley Rosario scored 10 points and had a team-high four steals.
But the Lightning struggled against West Chester's full-court press as the Golden Rams turned 25 turnovers into 33 easy points. GBC has now turned the ball over 20 or more times in all three of its games.
Defensively, the Lightning forced 19 West Chester turnovers which they converted into 13 points. GBC also outrebounded the Golden Rams, 43-37. The Lightning have outrebounded their opponent in all three of their games this season.
GBC won the opening tip and Rosario went right to the basket for an uncontested layup just four seconds into the game to give the Lightning a quick 2-0 lead. The ensuing WCU trip down the floor, Megan Stewart (10 points, three assists) nailed a three-point field goal, followed later by a Allison Hostetter (14 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, six steals) jumper, and the Rams were up, 5-2.
The Lightning responded as Weldon hit a jumper and then Jones found Akilah Sewell (four points, four rebounds, three blocks) in the paint for a layup to put GBC back up, 6-5. But a Janelle Garber layup at 15:30 regained WCU the lead (7-6) which they would never relinquish.
Garber's layup started a 12-2 Ram surge, highlighted by two Mary Kate Serratelli three-pointers, and the Rams were up 19-8. The Lightning would not quit though, as Weldon's three-point field goal at 9:49 started a 10-3 GBC run that ultimately cut the deficit to four nearing the six-minute mark.
WCU would extend the lead back to seven (27-20) nearing the three-minute mark, but a layup by Sewell, followed later by a Rosario jumper with 35 seconds left in the half pulled GBC within three, 27-24 before intermission.
However, the Rams would charge out to an 18-4 run to start the second half and take a 17-point lead (45-28) almost six minutes in. They would lead by as many as 21 and never allow GBC within 10 fro m that point on.
The Lightning are back in action on Thurs., Dec. 3 when they host Washington Adventist at 6 p.m. in the Jones Center.
