GBC Women’s Basketball Hosts Cheyney in Season Home Opener

Lightning Look to Rebound From Season-Opening Loss at STAC

Junior Janae Weldon led the Lightning in scoring last season. She and the Lightning look to bounce back from a season-opening loss at STAC when they host Cheyney on Sat. at 3 p.m.

PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team will host Cheyney University of Pennsylvania on Sat., Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. in the Lightning's season home opener at the Joseph West Jones Center.

GBC (0-1) is coming off a season-opening, 72-58 road loss at St. Thomas Aquinas on Mon., Nov. 16. The Lightning had three scorers in double-figures, out-rebounded the Spartans 49-41 and turned the ball over one less time than did STAC; however, GBC struggled to 28.6 percent shooting from the field, including 0-for-9 from three-point range.

Despite the loss, head coach Jen Carleton was encouraged by the play of redshirt-sophomore guard Jacinda Jones, who recorded 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, three blocks and a steal in her first game coming off of a season-ending ACL injury a year ago.

Also, two freshmen forwards, Devonne Richardson and Irene Hudson, led GBC in scoring and rebounding in their collegiate debuts. Richardson scored a team-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds and a team-high four steals, and Hudson posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Carleton used three freshmen in her starting lineup.

Meanwhile, Cheyney is also coming off a season-opening loss on a poor shooting performance Wed. night against Shepherd. The host Lady Wolves shot 36 percent from the field and 47 percent from the free-throw line en-route to a 76-63 loss.

Senior forward Angel Stephens paced Cheyney with a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds. Stephanie Orji and Angel Henderson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Cheyney, which finished 12-13 overall and 7-7 in the conference last season, was picked to finish fifth of eight teams in the East Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in a pre-season coaches poll conducted in late October. The Lady Wolves have made two trips to the PSAC post-season tournament in as many years. Along with Stephens who averaged 13.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg last season, they feature a pre-season All-PSAC squad member in senior guard Lutfiyya Muhammad.
