Wilmington, DE – Nolan, Gullickson and Weldon lead Lightning but last second shot falls short
The Lightning women's basketball team hosted St. Michael's College last night in their last game of the year. The Lightning jumped out to an 11-4 lead to start the game, and despite two lead changes, they managed to maintain four-point advantage (34-30) at half.
With the start of the second half, the Lightning controlled the tempo of the game, and stretched their lead to eight points, with 11:50 left in the game. However, as the minutes ticked off the clock, the Lightning hit an unfortunate stretch of missed shots, and saw their lead slip away. With seven seconds remaining, St. Michael's made one of two from the line to stretch their lead to 60-58. Senior Kellyn Nolan nabbed the rebound and passed it to Evebonee Acosta, who found Janae Weldon for a last second, buzzer beating shot. As both teams, spectators and referees watched and heard the buzzer go off, Weldon's shot just missed, as the ball hit the back of the rim.
Kellyn Nolan lead the Lightning with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Amber Gullickson put up 16 points and Janae Weldon added 14 points and 2 assists. Arielle Alford took to the boards with 13 rebounds.
The Lightning return in the year 2009 hosting cross-town CACC rival Wilmington University on January 6, 2009 at 6:00pm.
