GBC Alumnus Michael Tobiason Jr. Qualifies for US Open

ROCKVILLE, Md. – Wilmington golfer Michael Tobiason Jr. earned a spot in the U.S. Open Monday by finishing in a tie for third place in a sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club.
Tobiason shot a first-round 69 and a second-round 66. The top-10 finishers among the 112 golfers in the Rockville qualifier earned spots in the Open, which will be played June 13-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Among the other golfers who earned Open spots at the Rockville qualifier were PGA Tour veterans Fred Funk and Ty Tryon and former U.S. Amateur champion Bubba Dickerson.

The 27-year old Wilmington pro qualified for his first sectional by shooting a 70 in a local qualifier at Applebrook Golf Club in Malvern, Pa. to earn one of seven spots available.
Tobiason was a two-time All-American at Goldey-Beacom and turned professional in 2006. He has been playing on the Fuzion-Minor League Golf Tour.

Tobiason won medalist honors at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship in each of his four years at Goldey-Beacom. GBC won conference titles in 2003, 2004 and 2005 with Tobiason leading the way. In 2006, Goldey-Beacom became the first team from the CACC to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Alumnus Megan O’Donnell Coaches Local A.I. duPont to State Championship

BEAR, Del. – Former Goldey-Beacom College women’s soccer player Megan O’Donnell coached the Alexis I. duPont High School girls’ soccer team to a 2-0 victory over archrival Charter School of Wilmington in the DIAA Girls’ Soccer State Tournament championship on Fri., June 3.
The Tigers did not allow a single goal in four state tournament games en-route to the school’s first girls’ soccer state championship since 2004 and sixth since the tournament began in 1995.
O’Donnell, who won a high school state championship as a senior with St. Mark’s in 2000, was a four-year player at GBC from 2001 through 2004.
She played on the two most successful teams in the GBC women’s soccer program’s history in 2001 and 2002 when the Lightning won a combined 30 games in two seasons. She still ranks tied for 10th on the school’s career assists list with seven.
