Wes Hood and Heather Draper Earn GBC March Athletes of the Month Honors
PIKE CREEK, Del. – Seniors Wes Hood of the men’s golf team and Heather Draper of the softball team have been named Goldey-Beacom College male and female athletes of the month for the month of March. Both of these athletes put up impressive numbers and performances this past month.
Hood became the first GBC athlete to earn a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Student-Athlete of the Month award when the CACC honored him this month. This award is handed out from September to May to student-athletes who thrive in athletics, in the classroom and in the community.
Hood, a native of Chesapeake City, Md. is a standout golfer for the Lightning and also an active member of the GBC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Hood has participated in events such as the school’s Toys for Tots program during the last two holiday seasons, delivering wrapped gifts to children at the Home Life Management Shelter in Wilmington. He also worked as a volunteer referee at the GBC Dodgeball Tournament on Mar. 10, which was sponsored by the SAAC.
Hood claimed All-Conference status this season and placed 18th at the 2011 CACC Tournament to help the Lightning finish third as a team. His scoring average for the season is fifth in the school’s record books and he is fifth on the career scoring average list (79.39). He won two tournaments in his career and is the GBC all-time leader for rounds played.
Draper, the softball team’s senior co-captain, had a tremendous month in the circle as she helped the Lightning get off to a 10-4 start in the first month of the season. In five appearances, she earned a record of 3-1 with two complete games and 22.1 innings pitched. She had an ERA of 1.57 (2nd on the team for the month) and opponents hit just .235 against her.
The Bridgeville, Del. native tossed four innings of scoreless softball and struck out six in a Lightning win over Briarcliffe College on Mar. 19, then dominated in three scoreless innings with four strikeouts against Lincoln University on Mar. 22.
But she saved her best performance of the month for last, as GBC opened CACC play on Mar. 26 against pre-season league favorite and perennial powerhouse, Caldwell.
Draper earned a complete game victory as she allowed just six hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks as the Lightning beat Caldwell for the first time since 2006 by a score of 3-2.
