Darnell Cephas and Devonne Richardson Earn GBC February Athletes of the Month Honors
PIKE CREEK, Del. – Senior Darnell Cephas of the men’s basketball team and sophomore Devonne Richardson of the women’s basketball team have been named Goldey-Beacom College male and female athletes of the month for the month of February. Both of these athletes put up impressive numbers and performances this past month.
Cephas, a 6-foot-1 senior guard who has emerged as a star in his final season at GBC, helped the team earn a 4-3 record and clinch a regular season Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division title. With that title, the Lightning also earned a No. 1 seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament.
The Smyrna, Del. native shot 43-percent from the field (35-percent from three-point range) and averaged 8.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals per-game during a pivotal stretch for the Lightning. He had three consecutive double-figure scoring performances in the middle of the month against Chestnut Hill (2/9), Nyack (2/12) and Felician (2/19).
First, on the road against CHC, Cephas delivered a career-high 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from three-point range. He also had five assists, three steals and three rebounds as he carried the Lightning on his back in a tough, 80-79 loss at the Sorgenti Arena. Cephas followed that performance up with a 10-point effort in a 68-64 GBC win at Nyack, and then scored 14 points as the Lightning avenged last year’s conference finals loss to Felician with a 79-71 win at the Jones Center.
Richardson, a 5-foot-8 guard/forward, was a gamechanger for the Lightning women’s basketball team this month. In a 7-2 month for GBC, she nearly averaged a double-double with 12.2 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per-game.
She scored in double-figures in all but three of the nine games, including two consecutive 17-point efforts on the road at Nyack and Georgian Court. Richardson followed up those two performances with 16 points and 13 rebounds against Felician and 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists against PhilaU.
The Balitmore, Md. native was also key in the Lightning’s upset win over USciences in the CACC quarterfinals. She scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help GBC take down the No. 2 seed and No. 7 ranked team in the East Region and earn a return trip to the semifinals.
