Kaden Barmer’s Walk-Off Homer Caps Baseball’s Rally for 8-6 Triumph Over Jefferson in the CACC Tournament

When Goldey-Beacom scored three runs in the last of the eighth inning for a one-run deficit, this author thought "we are going to win."  One inning later, freshman Kaden Barmer (Edgewood, MD) made that limb a sturdy one.

Barmer's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a three-run frame and sent Goldey-Beacom to the winners bracket of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with an 8-6 triumph over Jefferson in Waterbury, CT.

GBC (33-20) will face Wilmington on day two of the tournament Friday at 11:00 am.  That winner goes to the conference final needing just one victory for the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

While a conference title and the guaranteed postseason berth are goals, the goal of making the NCAA Tournament got a big boost after the Lightning rallied from a 6-2 deficit going to the last of the eighth inning.

The rally commenced when Barmer drew a one-out walk, took second on a single from junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) and scored when sophomore Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) continued his outstanding campaign with an RBI single to plate Barmer.

Both runners swiped the next bag 90 feet from the previous before sophomore Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA), also an owner of clutch hits in recent weeks, lined a two-run double to right for a 6-5 contest.

The Rams looked for more runs after loading the bases in the ninth, but senior reliever Nate Miller (Mechanicsburg, PA) came up with the game's biggest erase in striking out Justin Egner to end the frame and keep things at 6-5.

Jefferson finished the contest with 14 runners left on base.

The drama continued into the ninth.  Senior Joey Current (Denver, PA) ripped a one-out double and freshman Shawn Roy (New Castle, DE) lined an RBI single that plated sophomore pinch-runner Connor Wilson (Clayton, DE) for a 6-6 tie.

After Roy stole second to put the winning run in scoring position, Barmer did his thing.  He cracked a 1-2 pitch to right-center field that certainly looked like extra bases off the bat and left the yard for his fourth home run of the season.

Barmer now is riding a seven-game hitting streak with Smethers and Roy each at six.

This all was possible because of yet another great outing and yet another no-decision from senior first team All-CACC pick Connor Blence (Downingtown, PA), who struck out five over seven innings.

Miller also deserves his name in lights with his 15th career victory, establishing a new school record he shared with Anthony DiMartino (2019-23) and Mitch Guerrieri (2018-22).

Smethers had two hits and three RBI with Neris and Keith recording two hits apiece.  Neris rapped an RBI double in the first and Smethers followed suit in the second for a 2-0 GBC lead.

Andrew Holub homered, Jordan Tiburcio rapped four hits and Tyler Behm struck out eight over 7 1/3 innings for Jefferson (24-21).
