Baseball Advances to its First CACC Final With Victory Over Felician

Goldey-Beacom clinched its first trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final with a 20-13 victory over Felician after opening the day with a 10-8 loss in the winners bracket to Wilmington in Waterbury, CT.

Goldey-Beacom (33-21) and Wilmington (38-15) will battle in the final on Saturday, beginning at 9:00 am (please note the time change).  The Lightning need two victories to claim their first conference title and the Wildcats require just one for a league crown.

The Lightning in their victory plated six runs in the last of the fifth inning for a 14-10 lead.  Senior Joey Current (Denver, PA) hit a solo homer, junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) lined a two-run double, second team all-league pick Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE) had a run-scoring double, sophomore Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA) recorded an RBI single and scored on an error.

Five more runs crossed home in the eighth for a 20-12 margin, highlighted by Stewart's two-run single.

Keith rapped a season-best four hits, falling a home run short of the cycle.  Stewart recorded two hits and four RBI, second team All-CACC selection Jake Macey (Smyrna, DE) also had four RBI, Smethers collected three hits and three RBI with freshman Kaden Barmer (Edgewood, MD) getting three RBI.

The 20 runs easily are the most for GBC in a CACC Tournament game.  The previous high of 12 was accomplished twice last season against Wilmington.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the second inning vs. Wilmington scored three times for a 3-0 lead.  Keith crossed home on a throwing error and freshman Shawn Roy (New Castle, DE) delivered a two-run single.

Things were level, 4-4, before the Lightning scored four times in the top of the sixth.  Current plated one on a squeeze bunt, Stewart got a two-run single and sophomore Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) added an RBI single for an 8-4 margin.

The Wildcats got three back in the sixth for an 8-7 deficit, highlighted by D'Angelo Ponce's RBI double.  Chase Fleming in the eighth lined a go-ahead, two-run single and scored an insurance run later in the frame on an error.

Senior Kory Williams (Pennsauken, NJ), named first team All-CACC, did his best over six innings with three strikeouts for the Lightning.  Roy and Stewart each had two hits.

Fleming had four hits and four RBI, CACC Player of the Year Tyler Pirrung rapped three hits with Ponce adding two for Wilmington.  Xavier Cortez struck out six over 5 2/3 innings, Ryan Kiendle was breached for just one hit over 2 1/3 scoreless frames for the win and Garrett Quinn yielded just a hit batter in the ninth for the save.
