Goldey-Beacom baseball wrapped its four-game series with Queens (NY) with a 14-7 victory in the first game of the day before falling 7-3 in Flemington, NJ.
In game one, Goldey-Beacom came out strong with a two-run homer from sophomore Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE) in the first inning, followed by two more runs scored off an error. Queens earned two unearned runs in the third from a GBC error that made the score 4-2 before an RBI from sophomore Zach Smethers (Nazareth, Pa.) to score sophomore Owen Knerr (Ocean City, MD). In the fourth inning, Queens scored two more on a walk and a single from Connor Waiting. A solo home run from Knerr made the score 6-4 before the Knights responded with three runs off a double from Nick Piazza and a single from Justin Chong.
The remainder of the game belonged to the Lightning, starting in the sixth inning with sophomore Tyee Irving (Milford, PA) scoring on a wild pitch and then a huge grand slam from Keith to put GBC back on top. The seventh inning saw a double from Irving to advance sophomore Connor Wilson (Clayton, DE) and an error by queens to score junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) and Irving, giving the Lightning the 14-7 win.
Game two saw much less scoring from the Lightning, with Queens going up 3-0 in the third inning on a double from Justin Chong and a two-run homer from Vincent Mallon. Keith continued his impressive batting in the sixth inning with a triple to right center field that scored Knerr, followed by Keith scoring his own run on an RBI from Current and Wilson scoring on an RBI by Irving.
With the game tied 3-3 in the seventh inning, Queens took control with a John Harkins single that scored two, a single from Justin Chong to advance Tommy Pasqua, and a passed ball that scored Harkins.
Goldey-Beacom plays next on Wednesday, when it hosts Jefferson for a doubleheader at noon at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
