Goldey-Beacom saw its pitchers take a no-hitter into the sixth inning and complete a three-game sweep of Bridgeport with its fifth consecutive win, a 13-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Bridgeport at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
Newport News, VA sophomore Zach Davis (2-2) was outstanding on the bump, tossing 4 2/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts to keep the Purple Knights off balance. Junior Timmy Jones (Bridgeville, DE) came out of the bullpen to get Patrick Krempasky on a lineout to center with the bases loaded, ending the fifth and keeping the momentum with the Lightning (18-11, 11-3 CACC).
The pitchers' duel finally saw the scoreboard dented with Goldey-Beacom scoring in the last of the fourth inning. Junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) roped a leadoff double, stole third and scored when sophomore Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 contest.
Things got slightly lopsided in the fifth, when the Lightning plated four runs for a 5-0 margin. Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) lined a two-run single, fellow sophomore Jake Macey (Smyrna, DE) added an RBI single and Keith followed with a run-scoring double.
Then the contest really went in Goldey-Beacom's favor with eight runs in the sixth for a 13-0 cushion. The highlights included sophomore Brent Williams (Woodstown, NJ) hitting a two-run homer, senior Joey Current (Denver, PA) lining a three-run double and sophomore Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA) adding a two-run long ball.
Keith joined Current with three RBI, Smethers rapped two hits and Stewart also had two hits. Jones pitched 1 2/3 frames and sophomore Cody Klotz (Frederica, DE) got the final two outs for the GBC victory via the run rule.
Jaden Echevarria lined an RBI single in the seventh for Bridgeport (9-14, 5-9).
Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday is home against Lincoln (PA), beginning at 2:00 pm.
