Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Caldwell With 11-7 Triumph

Goldey-Beacom built an early lead and then held on for an 11-7 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Caldwell at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Goldey-Beacom (11-9, 4-1 CACC) grabbed a 2-1 lead in the last of the first inning thanks to an RBI triple from Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE), followed by a run-scoring double from fellow sophomore Owen Knerr (Ocean City, MD).

Three more runs crossed home for the Lightning in the fourth for a 5-1 margin, keyed by a two-run double from sophomore Jake Macey (Smyrna, DE).  Senior Joey Current (Denver, PA) got an RBI single in the fifth and junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) lined a double off the pitcher's foot for a 7-1 cushion.

The Cougars in the top of the fifth closed to 7-2 before sophomore Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) clubbed a two-run homer in the last of the frame for a 9-2 Lightning lead.  It was Neris' team-leading fifth long ball of the season and third in the last four contests.

Devon Cass lined a two-run single in the ninth in bringing Caldwell to an 11-7 deficit.  The Cougars benefited from an error to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate, but Christian Rinick grounded out to finally end it.

Macey had three RBI with Neris and Stewart recording two hits apiece.  Keith's triple extended his hitting streak to 10 games, one short of the team season high held by Knerr.

Newport News, VA sophomore Zach Davis (1-1) struck out four over five innings, allowing just one earned run in helping the Lightning to their fifth straight win over the Cougars.

Justin Levine recorded three hits with Cass and Jimmy Turchi getting two apiece for Caldwell (1-9, 0-5).

Goldey-Beacom returns to action Tuesday, when it visits Jefferson for a 2:00 pm game.
