Baseball Takes Two at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom opened its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Caldwell with a 13-10 victory before an 8-1 triumph in Caldwell, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom (10-9, 3-1 CACC) in game one saw junior Trey Mason (Germantown, MD) hit a grand slam as part of his five-RBI day with sophomore Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) getting three hits that included two doubles.  Owen Knerr (Ocean City, MD), who recorded three hits, and fellow sophomore Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA), who drove home three, also homered for the Lightning.

It was Smethers' two-run blast in the eighth inning that put Goldey-Beacom ahead for good, 11-10.

Swoyersville, PA senior Tommy Federici (2-0) struck out four in retiring the last eight batters for the win.

Goldey-Beacom in game two broke open a close game with six runs in the seventh for the final score.  Sophomore Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE) had a two-run double, senior Joey Current (Denver, PA) drove one home on a fielder's choice and Smethers clubbed a three-run long ball.

Downingtown, PA senior Connor Blence (2-2) was outstanding on the bump, striking out eight over six innings in allowing just one run and four hits.  Smethers ended with three hits and three RBI.

GBC and Caldwell (1-8, 0-4) on Sunday will play the finale of their three-game series, beginning at 1:00 pm in Hockessin, DE.
