Baseball Deals Goose Eggs in a Pair of Victories

Goldey-Beacom opened today's play in Cary, NC with a 1-0 triumph over Franklin Pierce before getting a 7-0 victory over Mercy.

Game one belonged to the pitching staff.  Pennsauken, NJ senior Kory Williams (1-0) permitted just three hits over six scoreless innings with five strikeouts and sophomore Zach Davis (Newport News, VA) yielded just two hits over three maiden frames.  Williams retired the first 13 batters he faced and had a no-hitter going for 5 1/3 innings.

Williams and Davis combined for zero walks and faced just five batters above the minimum.

The Lightning in the last of the first inning put up a picket fence.  Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) got a one-out single, stole second and third before scoring on a single from fellow sophomore Owen Knerr (Ocean City, MD).

Neris and Knerr closed with two hits apiece for the Lightning, who notched their second 1-0 victory in program history.  The first took place March 16, 2022 at home vs. Lincoln (PA).

Game two saw senior Nate Miller (Mechanicsburg, PA) strike out three over six scoreless innings, yielding two hits.  Four relievers then combined for three strikeouts and no hits allowed over the last three frames.

Knerr had two hits and three RBI, junior Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) collected two and two with sophomore Roman Keith (Selbyville, DE) and senior Joey Current (Denver, PA) getting two hits apiece for the Lightning (3-1).

Goldey-Beacom next week makes its second trip to Cary, beginning with a noon doubleheader Friday against Frostburg State.
