Volleyball Shows Plenty of Grit on Day Two of Season-Opening Tournament

Goldey-Beacom concluded its strong play on the weekend with a 3-1 loss (14-25, 25-22, 15-25, 13-25) to Seton Hill before a 3-0 setback (18-25, 15-25, 21-25) to Shippensburg in Clarion, PA.
 
Goldey-Beacom in the second set versus Seton Hill made a big statement with three blocks, including two from freshman Gracie Hoban (Dagsboro, DE) and forcing its opponents into nine attack errors.  Junior Baylee Brin (Salina, KS) had four of the Lightning's 14 kills in the set.
 
Freshman Cassie Hall (Williamsburg, VA) continued her impressive weekend with 10 kills and Brin recorded eight.  Juliana Malena (Miami, FL) notched 22 assists, fellow sophomore Ada Koksal (Istanbul, Turkiye) had 14 and sophomore Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) totaled 18 digs for the Lightning.
 
Catie Flohr had 12 kills, Payton Rodberg notched 11 and Ella Deeter amassed 29 assists for the Griffins.
 
The Lightning in the second match displayed a great deal of tenacity in their fourth match of the weekend, but simply ran into a buzzsaw.  The Raiders in the second set recorded 16 kills after notching 15 in the first, ending with a .224 hitting percentage.
 
Freshman Kelci Gingras (Orem, UT) had 11 kills and 10 digs, Fernandez notched 25 digs with Malena and Koksal each getting 14 assists for GBC (1-3).
 
Hailey Cappleman pounded 12 kills, Gracen Nutt had 11 with Kearstin Davis adding 37 assists for Shippensburg (3-1).
 
Gingras led the hit parade on the week with 36 kills, Hall closed with 30 and Brin notched 25 to go with seven blocks.  Fernandez recorded 93 digs and Malena had 76 assists.
 
Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday is at Millersville for a 7:00 pm match.
