Baseball Falls, 4-1, to Franklin Pierce in the NCAA Tournament Opener

Goldey-Beacom began play in its fourth NCAA Tournament over the last five years, but was handed a 4-1 loss by Franklin Pierce in Center Valley, PA.

Franklin Pierce in the top of the first inning cracked the scoreboard.  Michael Quiros lined a one-out single, was replaced by Kiobel Lugo on a fielder's choice, the latter stole second and scored on Anthony Marcano's double to left-center field.

The Ravens got things to 2-0 in the fourth, when Nolan DeAndrade led off with a home run to left field.

The Lightning manufactured a run in the last of the fifth for a 2-1 deficit.  Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) drew a leadoff walk, took second on a single from fellow senior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) and scored when senior Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) lined a single through the left side.

But Franklin Pierce got things back to a two-run contest in the seventh.  Julien Monks lined a leadoff double inside the third-base line, reached third on a flyout and scored on Quiors' sacrifice fly.

The Ravens (32-19) got it to 4-1 when Joe Acker singled and Lugo ripped a two-out double to left-center field.

The Lightning made things interesting in the ninth with two outs and none on.  Senior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) and freshman Brent Williams (Woodstown, NJ) each singled before Petrillo walked to load the bases, but Niklas Pavia came out of the bullpen to get the final out for the save.

Senior Mikey Hawbaker (Hagerstown, MD) gave the Lightning a solid performance, striking out five over seven innings in allowing three hits.  Junior Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) ended with two hits.

Drew DeLucia was outstanding on the bump for the Ravens, striking out seven over 8 2/3 frames before Pavia entered for the final batter.

Goldey-Beacom (34-20) on Thursday is back in action to face Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division rival Jefferson, starting at 2:35 pm.
