Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 25 Baseball Drops Two at No. 17 Jefferson

A matchup of two nationally ranked teams that was highly anticipated all season saw No. 25 Goldey-Beacom drop two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games, 14-3 in seven innings and 10-9 in eight innings, at No. 17 Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the second in game two got a solo home run from senior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) to draw level, 2-2.  Jefferson in the last of the frame saw Hernandez crack a three-run homer for a 5-2 lead.

The Lightning in the fourth got two runs back with Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) lining an RBI single and fellow senior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) adding a run-scoring double for a 5-4 deficit.

Goldey-Beacom (22-8, 12-2 CACC) entered the seventh looking to push across at least one run and did better than that.  After junior Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) drew a leadoff walk, senior Jaden Dickerson (New Castle, DE) followed by crushing a two-run blast to left that gave his side a 6-5 lead.

It was Dickerson's sixth long ball of the campaign.

GBC was not done, seeing the bases juiced followed a walk and a fielder's choice error.  Senior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) then scored on a wild pitch and, after Benner walked, freshman Brent Williams (Woodstown, NJ) got a bases-loaded walk for an 8-5 margin.

Another wild pitch brought home another run, this time with freshman Max Lopuhovsky (Scranton, PA) scoring for a 9-5 contest to cap the five-run frame.

GBC looked to slam the door in the bottom of the last regulation inning, but Luis Beato Mora had other ideas by belting a grand slam for a 9-9 tie.

The game went to extras and the Rams (22-8, 14-2) won it in the eighth.  Gabe Silva drew a one-out walk and Mora followed with another walk.  Jay Kalieta had an infield single to load the bases before Silva crossed home on a wild pitch.

Benner closed with three hits for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the first inning of game one got off the bus firing, especially when sophomore Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) hit a leadoff homer.  Dickerson gave the Lightning a 2-0 bulge later in the frame with an RBI single.

The Rams responded in the last of the frame with six runs, keyed by Mora's three-run homer.  Silva, Thomas Matuszewski and Justin Egner all had RBI singles in the frame.

Charles homered in the third to get GBC within 6-3, but that was before Jefferson got six more runs before the inning ended.  Egner and Matuszews each had a two-run single in that time with Joshua Lopez and Javon Hernandez also getting an RBI single apiece for a 12-3 margin.

Charles, who ended with two hits, now has seven home runs on the season and 13 career.

Lopez homered in the fifth and Mora added an RBI single in the fifth as Jefferson won via the run rule.  Lopez, Matuszewski and Silva all had three hits apiece with Danny Kerr striking out three over seven innings for the Rams.

The national rankings are according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.  The same group has Goldey-Beacom ranked second in the East Region and Jefferson first.

These teams on Sunday will play a noon doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
