No. 17 Goldey-Beacom opened its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Chestnut Hill with a 7-1 victory, which was followed by a 12-5 loss at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
The Lightning in game one opened a 1-0 lead in the last of the first inning when senior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) drove one home on a fielder's choice. Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) got a run-scoring sacrifice bunt in the second and fellow senior Jaden Dickerson (New Castle, DE) added a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 margin.
Petrillo lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth before Chestnut Hill's Christian Peluso cracked a solo homer in the fifth for a 4-1 margin. That was before GBC got three in the seventh as Petrillo scored on a throwing error and Kolmansberger launched a two-run homer, his 16th career long ball that puts him tied for fourth in team history.
Kolmansberger also now is at 135 career RBI, just two behind the school record held by Kyle Walker (2021-24).
Downingtown, PA junior Connor Blence (3-0) struck out six over seven innings, allowing just one run and five hits. Wyatt Atkinson (Moorestown, NJ) struck out two over two innings with fellow senior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) and freshman Brent Williams (Woodstown, NJ) getting two hits apiece for the Lightning.
Kenyon Motley rapped three hits for Chestnut Hill.
The Griffins in game two had a 2-1 lead before scoring five times in the top of the third. Wyatt Spinks and Michael Benedetto III each had RBI singles in the frame and Michael Pascoe was just getting warm with a sacrifice fly.
The Lightning refused to go away, scoring three in the fourth for a 7-5 deficit. Benner scored on a balk with Dickerson and freshman Zach Smethers (Nazareth, PA) each getting an RBI double.
But Chestnut Hill (20-17, 15-11 CACC) added insurance runs thereafter. Pascoe blasted a three-run homer in the fifth and Jason Kelly added an RBI double in the seventh for the final.
Smethers and senior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) recorded two hits apiece for the Lightning. Kelly notched three hits, Pascoe had two and five RBI with Benedetto, Aiden Myers and Justin Geiger getting two hits apiece.
Colby Seelig was outstanding out of the bullpen for the Griffins, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing just four hits.
Goldey-Beacom (30-12, 20-6) reached 30 victories for a third straight year and broke the school record with its 20th CACC victory, besting the previous mark of 19 set in 2021. The squad, ranked No. 1 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll, now is tied with Jeferson (20-6) for first place in the CACC South Division.
Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday entertains Post in a noon doubleheader at Doyle Field.
