Baseball Opens Campaign With 6-1 Triumph Over Mercy

Coming off its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years, Goldey-Beacom started its 2025 season with a 6-1 triumph over Mercy in Cary, NC.

A big story in the game for the Lightning was the debut of freshman George Starr (Franklinville, NJ), who was outstanding over five innings with eight strikeouts.  He only allowed one run and four hits in facing just five batters above the minimum.

Senior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) got an RBI on a groundball in the top of the fifth inning to bring the Lightning to a 1-1 tie.  GBC then took its first lead of the season with senior Jaden Dickerson (New Castle, DE) and sophomore Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) each getting a walk before senior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) scored them both on a double.

A grounder from junior Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) turned into a two-run error in the eighth for a 5-1 margin and freshman Jaime Neris Jr. (Philadelphia, PA) got a fielder's choice groundout in the ninth for the final.

McEvoy had two hits and two RBI, senior Mitch Jolikko (Middletown, DE) rapped two hits, junior Kevin Dillon (Mount Bethel, PA) struck out five over two innings and senior Gage Bendix (Piscataway, NJ) got two strikeouts over two frames.

The 15 strikeouts are tops for the Lightning (1-0) in a season opener, besting the 10 against Chestnut Hill on March 23, 2021.  The school record overall for most in a contest is 17, set April 4, 2023 at Lincoln (PA).

Peyton Jeminson cracked two hits and Nevin Scaperotti struck out five over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision for the Mavericks (0-1).

Goldey-Beacom, ranked fourth in the East Region according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason Poll, on Friday plays Franklin Pierce at 4:00 pm and Mercy at 7:00 pm.  Franklin Pierce is fifth in the same poll.
