Volleyball Gains a Split on Opening Day



Goldey-Beacom ended its day with a 3-1 victory (25-13, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23) over Southern Connecticut State after a 3-1 loss (25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 17-25) loss to Queens (NY) in New Haven, CT.
 
Against SCSU, GBC in the opening set dominated with 13 kills and a .346 hitting percentage, vs. six and .028 for the home side.  Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) notched five kills in that time with fellow senior Piper Nanouski (Chicago, IL) adding four.
 
The Lightning gutted their way through the fourth set with 13 kills, aided by five from junior Giuliana Jaku (Frontin, Italy).  Things finally ended after 11:00 pm when the visitors held the Owls to a mere .053 hitting percentage in the fourth set and .096 for the match, earning first-year coach Alexa Poss her first GBC victory.
 
Jaku had 15 kills and 20 digs, Burch recorded 12 kills, Nanouski amassed nine with freshman Ada Koksal (Istanbul, Turkiye) getting 34 assists for the Lightning (1-1).
 
Sydney Bennett and Katie Bardak notched eight kills apiece with Madi Roar getting 22 assists for the Owls.
 
Goldey-Beacom against Queens came out flying in the opening set, recording a .444 hitting percentage thanks to 13 kills just one error over 27 attempts.  Nanouski was the dominant force in that, recording six kills.
 
The Lightning played the Knights tough over the next two sets with only a 24-22 kills disadvantage.  However, Queens notched 16 kills in the fourth set with a .239 percentage.
 
Burch was outstanding in her first match with the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold, recording 17 kills and just one error over 38 attacks for a solid .421 percentage.  Nanouski totaled 13 kills, Koksal dished 34 assists and freshman Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) had 24 digs.  Freshman Bella Talley (Gambrills, MD) notched 13 digs with Jaku adding 11.
 
Madi Hathaway amassed 13 kills and 18 assists for the Knights.
 
Goldey-Beacom has less than 13 hours to rest before a noon match Saturday at Mercy.
