Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Dealt Heartbreaking 3-2 Loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom looked like it would be off to a golden start in the season opener, but it could not hold on to a second-half lead and was handed a 3-2 loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, NY.

The teams' first meeting in seven years saw Goldey-Beacom push the tempo in the 60th minute to open the scoring.  Senior Tiwalade Ogunfadebo (New Castle, DE) got the ball down the left side and fed a perfect ball in the box to junior Emanuel Bustos (Miami, FL), who buried one into a yawning net for his second career goal.

The Spartans 23 seconds later beat an offsides trap to level the match.  Elias Ait Bouali pushed one in the middle to Kevon Evans, who won a footrace that saw him find the back of the cage.

But the Lightning in the 63rd minute had an answer, thanks to some great individual play from junior Lucas Fernandez (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) for a 2-1 margin.  He won a ball inside the 18 and used some great footwork to ward off the defense and put one inside the left post for his first marker in the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold.

The home side for a second time rallied to even things and it was that guy Evans again.  He got the ball in the 70th minute and again struck paydirt, this time bringing things to a 2-2 tie.

A tie seemed imminent, but the Spartans thought otherwise in getting their first lead.  They drew a penalty kick and it was Evans who got the nod, burying it just below the crossbar with 1:43 left to complete his hat trick.

Junior Jamel Yasin (Woodbury, NJ) had nine saves for the Lightning (0-1) with Johan Morales and Dalton Houser getting three apiece for the Spartans (1-0).

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday plays its home opener against the District of Columbia.  Please note that now is a 6:00 pm start and will be played at Banning Park in Wilmington.
