Volleyball Rallies From Two Sets Down to Stun Frostburg State; Gaining Two-Match Split at Bobcat Invitational

Goldey-Beacom in its second match of the day came back from a two-set deficit and dominated play over the last two sets for a 3-2 victory (20-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-8) at Frostburg State in Frostburg, MD.

This came after GBC opened with a 3-1 loss (25-27, 26-24, 20-25, 15-25) to Edinboro.

The third set was as tense as possible, especially after the Bobcats rallied from 24-20 down for a 24-24 tie.  But Goldey-Beacom found a way, getting seniors Piper Nanouski (Chicago, IL) and Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) to block AJ Thompson's attack for a 25-24 lead.  The visitors then forced an attack error to end the set.

Nanouski was not done, getting four kills in the fourth set to help the Lightning maintain their hold on momentum.  Both squads notched 11 kills in the stanza, but GBC (5-4) induced Frostburg State into seven errors.

The seismic shift was complete in the finale, which saw Goldey-Beacom play a near perfect set.  Nanouski ensured that by getting five kills in helping the Lightning record 11 kills and no errors over 20 attacks in that time for a .550 hitting percentage, leading the squad to their fourth win the last five outings.

The Bobcats had little room to breathe in the set and it showed, getting just six kills and a .150 percentage.

Nanouski had a career-best 22 kills, junior Giuliana Jaku (Frontin, Italy) recorded 15 and 10 digs with Burch adding 14 kills.  Ada Koksal (Turkiye, Istanbul) recorded 46 assists and 12 digs with reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) getting 23 digs and 10 assists.

Beverly Braun pounded 20 kills with Dani Kunkle adding 15 for the Bobcats.

An excruciating loss in the first set against Edinboro was offset by a victory in the second.  GBC ended the set on an 11-4 run to overcome a 20-16 deficit, getting two kills from Burch, and forcing Edinboro into seven errors for the set.

The Fighting Scots took the third set with a 15-9 kills edge and had all the momentum in the fourth, recording 12 kills with just two errors.

Burch and Nanouski recorded 12 kills apiece, Jaku notched 10, Fernandez had 23 digs with Koksal getting 32 assists and 13 digs.

Makayla Neelands amassed 18 kills, Erika Lindqvist had 14, Abigale Soboleski totaled 24 assists and Carly Pry added 23 digs for Edinboro.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday faces Kutztown at 10:00 am and Indianapolis after 4:00 pm, also in Frostburg, MD.
