Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Dealt 5-0 Loss by No. 14 Molloy in the NCAA Tournament

Goldey-Beacom was handcuffed by solid pitching from No. 14 Molloy and was handed a 5-0 loss in the winners bracket at the NCAA Tournament in Uniondale, NY.

Sixth-seeded GBC (34-20) falls to the elimination bracket of the East 2 Regional and will battle seventh-seeded New Haven on Saturday, beginning at noon.  The winner heads to the championship round later in the day to face Molloy.

Molloy (41-12) needs just one victory to advance to the East Region final.  The survivor of Goldey-Beacom vs. New Haven contest will have to win twice for a trip to the tournament's final 16.

The weekend's if-necessary game is Sunday at noon.

The second inning was pivotal in the game's outcome with Molloy, the visiting team per NCAA protocol, getting two runs in the top of the frame.  The hosts loaded the bases with none out before Patrick Sanchez lifted a sacrifice fly and Anthony Manisero crossed home on a two-out wild pitch for a 2-0 contest.

GBC in the bottom half looked like its offense would counter and then some.  The Lightning took their turn in loading the bases, but starter JC Kiss did his job in maintaining the goose egg to get out of the inning.

Manisero got an RBI single in the sixth for a 3-0 margin before the Lions furthered the momentum with two runs in the eighth.  Sean Welsh ripped an RBI single to left and Sanchez got a sacrifice fly for the 5-0 margin.

Wilmington, DE senior Justin Jump did all he could on the mound, taking a no-hitter into the fourth inning despite the second-inning runs.  The second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick struck out three over 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and three hits.

Kiss was sensational, throwing a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts and allowing just two walks.  Manisero and Welsh closed with two hits apiece.

Fans, please keep in mind Saturday the NCAA Lacrosse Championship is being held at nearby Hofstra University and could cause traffic delays around Goldey-Beacom's game time.
