Baseball’s Season Ends With 7-0 Setback to New Haven in the NCAA Tournament

Goldey-Beacom, the proud owners of another sensational and decorated season, saw its 2024 campaign end with a 7-0 loss to New Haven at the NCAA Tournament in Uniondale, NY.

The Chargers were the ones providing the electricity in the top of the first inning with four runs.  Cole Maucere walked with the bases loaded, Casey Cerruto two batters later was hit by a pitch and Noah Budzik followed with a two-run single up the middle.

The Lightning were dealt a goose egg in the last of the frame thanks to incredible defense.  After junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) was hit by a pitch, senior Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) crushed one to left field that looked like a certain two-run homer.  However, Maucere leaped and made a tremendous catch over the wall.

Junior Mitch Jolikko (Middletown, DE), already with two hits, then took his turn looking to crack the scoreboard with two runners on and two outs in the eighth inning of a 5-0 game.  He sent a rocket to deep center field that Nick Ungania made a great play up against the wall with the catch.

Jolikko and junior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) had two hits apiece for the Lightning.

Drew Silverman simply was spectacular for the Chargers (31-24), tossing a seven-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks.

The loss ends another outstanding campaign for Goldey-Beacom (34-21), which made the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history with all coming in the last four years.  In just its eighth overall season since the program's reinstatement, GBC this year was ranked second in the East Region by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for a majority of the season and as high as 22nd in the organization's national poll.

GBC this season saw Kolmansberger named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year, Musey and fellow senior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) also picked first team with senior Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE) tabbed second team.

Jump also won the league's Top XVII Award for having the highest GPA on one of the competing teams at the finals site of each CACC Championship, similar to the NCAA Elite 90 Award.

Senior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) also took home hardware, being named to the CACC All-Tournament Team.  He batted .471 (8-for-17) in that span with four doubles, three RBI and the ninth-inning double to win game two and complete Goldey-Beacom's first-round sweep of Wilmington (DE).
