Phenomenal Five for Baseball and Softball Teams Earn CACC Weekly Honors

4/22/2024 12:00:00 AM

Another strong week for Goldey-Beacom's baseball and softball programs saw a combined five student-athletes gain weekly honors from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Senior Abigail O'Shields (Dagsboro, DE) was named Softball's Pitcher of the Week, McKenna Frank (Oxford, PA) was tabbed the sport's Rookie of the Week, sophomore Autumn Simpson (Elkton, MD) made the sport's Weekly Honor Roll, senior Jake Kelchner (Collegeville, PA) was picked Baseball's Pitcher of the Week and junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) made the sport's Weekly Honor Roll.

O'Shields struck out 35 over 19 2/3 innings, allowing just three earned runs in getting two victories with a save.  She notched 13 strikeouts Saturday against Dominican (NY) after getting 11 in game one Tuesday vs. Bloomfield.

In a truly remarkable year, O'Shields (15-8) has recorded 208 strikeouts on the season that has her ninth in the country and first in the CACC.  This easily is the school's single-season record and is fourth on the program's career list.  It is the fourth time this season she has been tabbed CACC Pitcher of the Week.

Frank batted .476 (10-for-21) on the week with five doubles, a triple, a home run and four RBI.  She had the tying home run in game two Thursday against Bloomfield before getting three hits and falling a home run short of a cycle in game two Saturday vs. Dominican (NY).

A solid player at shortstop who earlier this season notched a 22-game hitting streak, Frank is fifth in the CACC with 57 hits, second with 16 doubles and eighth with a .393 batting average.  It is the fourth time this year she has been selected CACC Rookie of the Week.

Simpson batted .529 (9-for-17) on the week with two doubles, eight RBI and a say in two walk-off wins.  She lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of seventh inning of game one, which turned into an error that plated two runs total in Goldey-Beacom's 2-1 win over Dominican (NY).  Simpson then had an RBI single in game two, capping a three-run seventh-inning rally in her squad's 6-5 triumph.

Goldey-Beacom (23-25, 13-7 CACC) is fourth in the CACC and has clinched a spot in the conference tournament.

Kelchner struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run in Goldey-Beacom's 7-1 victory Tuesday at Chestnut Hill.

Looking to regain the same form that saw him a season ago record 72 strikeouts and seven wins, Kelchner this year has 25 strikeouts over 26 2/3 innings with just 15 walks.

Kolmansberger batted .333 (7-for-21) on the week with two doubles, a home run and five RBI.  His home run was a significant one as it was a walk-off two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh inning of Goldey-Beacom's 6-4 victory Saturday over Chestnut Hill.  Kolmansberger had a hit in each of the two prior games against the Griffins.

In truly one of the best single-season runs of any athlete in school history, Kolmansberger is on a tear that has produced incredible numbers.  He is on a 26-game winning streak that is tied for the school record, during which he is batting .490 (48-for-98) with 11 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 47 RBI.  Kolmansberger is first in the league with 61 hits, first with 53 RBI, first with 15 doubles, second with 11 home runs and third with a .389 batting average.

Goldey-Beacom (27-16, 11-8 CACC) is tied for third in the CACC South Division with the top three teams each in the North and South Divisions making the conference tournament.
