Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 25 Baseball Sweeps a Pair From Regionally Ranked Queens (NY)

No. 25 Goldey-Beacom had its way in the first of back-to-back doubleheaders between regionally ranked teams, getting victories by scores of 8-3 and 11-1 over Queens (NY) at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ.

Game one saw Fords, NJ junior Ryan Pozo (1-0) get his first victory for the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold, coming out of the bullpen and keeping the Knights at bay.  He struck out five over 5 2/3 scoreless innings, yielding just one walk and three hits in facing only four batters above the minimum.

The offense was not too shabby either, plating two runs in the top of the sixth for a 4-3 lead.  Junior Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) lined a one-out single, scored on a triple from freshman Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) and the latter crossed home on a wild pitch.

Three more runs in the seventh made it a 7-3 contest.  Senior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) scored on a fielding error and junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) lined a two-run double down the left-field line.

Stewart homered in the eighth to close the scoring and end his two-hit, two-RBI game.

Sophomore Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) had two hits, including a solid homer, with senior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) also recording two hits for the Lightning (9-5).

Matt Filip homered as part of his two hits with Nick Barreiros and Joey Patane also getting two hits apiece for Queens (4-4).  Jordan Sanabria (0-2) struck out seven, but allowed four runs – three earned – and six hits over six innings.

The second game provided less drama, especially when the Lightning broke the mold with six runs in the top of the second.  Junior Nick Harkins (Newark, DE) drew a bases-loaded walk, Kolmansberger lined an RBI double, senior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) ripped a two-run single and Walker lived up to his name with the sacks juiced.

Senior Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) stroked an RBI single in the fourth before GBC got four runs in the fifth for an 11-0 score.  Junior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) roped a two-run, ground-rule double, Johnson lined an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch.

Wilmington, DE senior Justin Jump (2-0) again was dealing, striking out five over five innings in allowing just one run and two hits.  He has struck out 19 over his last three starts.

Miller, Musey and Kolmansberger rapped two hits apiece for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom is ranked second in the East Region and Queens (NY) is third, both according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

These teams on Friday again play a doubleheader in Flemington, this time with the first pitch at 2:00 pm.
