Baseball Handed 5-3 Loss by Jefferson in CACC Opener

Two formidable rivals who both are regionally ranked continued their spirited battle in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division with Goldey-Beacom handed a 5-3 loss by Jefferson in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning in the top of the third inning permitted an unearned run, but made amends in the last of the fourth.  Senior Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) stepped to the plate and launched one to left field for his 26th career homer, tying Marshall Awtry for the school record, and a 1-1 tie.

It remained a deadlock until the sixth, when the Rams exploded for the deciding runs.  Joshua Lopez lined a two-RBI double down the right-field line to break the tie and Marquise Wood followed with a two-run homer for a 5-1 contest.

GBC continued to show no quit, closing to 5-3 in the seventh with junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) lining an RBI double and junior Nick Harkins (Newark, DE) following with a run-scoring single.

The Lightning had the tying runs either on base or at the plate in each of the last three innings, but the Rams' bullpen each time got out of the jams.

Gabe Silva (3-0) got the victory in striking out three over five innings and Anthony Pillari struck out two in the ninth for the save.

Kolmansberger and senior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) had two hits apiece for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom (14-9, 0-1 CACC) is ranked second in the East Region, according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and Jefferson (10-6, 1-0) is ninth.  These teams played in the first round of the CACC Tournament each of the last two seasons with GBC winning last year after Jefferson was victorious in 2022.

These teams on Friday will close their three-game series with a noon doubleheader in East Falls.  Please note the date change due to impending bad weather on Saturday.
