Baseball Takes Weekend Series From D’Youville with 8-7 Triumph

Goldey-Beacom hit three home runs and held off a rally from D'Youville for an 8-7 victory at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning got to the Saints early when senior Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) cracked a two-run homer in the last of the first inning to open the scoring.  It was his 25th career long ball, moving him within one of Marshall Awtry for tops in program history.

Junior Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) then took his turn, lifting a sacrifice fly in the second and blasting a solo homer in the fifth for a 3-0 margin.  It was his fourth career home run.

D'Youville got two runs in the sixth before junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) continued to swing a hot bat, belting a three-run homer to make it 7-2.  He ended the weekend with six hits, a double, two home runs and nine RBI.

Billy Morris got a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Alex Dzimian lined an RBI single in the eighth for a 7-4 game.  Things continued to look drastic in the eighth when the visitors loaded the bases with two outs, but senior Lance Hinton (Wilmington, DE) came on and got Morris to pop out on the first pitch to end the threat.

Kolmansberger stole third and scored on a throwing error in the last of the eighth for what turned out to be a massive insurance run at 8-4.  The Saints in the ninth got an RBI double from Blaise Kolbert and a two-run single from Craig Oliver, but left the tying run at first base to end it.

Kolmansberger had three hits and three RBI in helping the Lightning (14-8), ranked second in the East Region according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, take three in the four-game weekend series.  Hinton got the last four outs for the save.

Ethan Hammond rapped three hits with Kolbert and Jon Simpson recording two apiece for the Saints (9-9).

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday hosts Jefferson in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference open, beginning at 2:00 pm.
