Baseball Notches Doubleheader Sweep of Staten Island

Goldey-Beacom saw great overall play in its doubleheader sweep, 8-3 and 13-5, over Staten Island at the CSI Baseball Complex in Staten Island, NY.

Game one saw the Lightning strike with four runs in the first opening with a sacrifice fly from senior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) to score junior Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ). A throwing error from Staten Island gave Goldey-Beacom a further two runs, before junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) fired an RBI double to right field for a 4-0 Lightning lead.

Staten Island added a run to its side of the scoreboard off a throwing error from the visitors, but Goldey-Beacom redeemed itself in the second after a second sacrifice fly from Miller score sophomore Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) to make the score 5-1.

In the fourth, having found a gap down the left field line, Charles made his way around the bases via wild pitches, which scored junior Matt Benner (Souderton, PA), and Miller drove home Charles on an RBI single.

The final Lightning run came in the fifth off an RBI single from Kolmansberger, and Staten Island closed all scoring with a two-RBI single from Chris Polemeni in the 8-3 Lightning win.

Kolmansberger closed with two hits and two RBI, Miller notched one hit and three RBI, with Charles and senior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) getting two hits apiece. Senior Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE) continues to dominate on the mound, closing with six strikeouts over six innings for a 4-0 record.

In the second inning of game two, Goldey-Beacom stormed to a 7-0 lead off four hits, singles from Kolmansberger and Miller, and doubles from Walker and junior Calen Kampes (Colora, MD).

Staten Island answered back in the third, with Michael Palermo driving home Nicholas Rodriguez and Jaden Waterman on a two-RBI single, a wild pitch from the Lightning, and RBI groundout for Polemeni.

Having an 8-4 lead, the Lightning continued to tally runs with another three in the fifth, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from junior Nathan Turner (Dover, DE), a double from freshman Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) and a triple fired to left center from Petrillo.

A final run came from Staten Island in the sixth before the Lightning secured the 13-5 victory off walks from junior Jimmy Hallman (Washington Township, NJ) and senior Michael Baginski (Millville, NJ).

Miller and Kampes each finished with two hits and two RBI, Turner and Stewart closed with two hits and one RBI apiece, senior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) notched two hits for GBC (11-7).

Palermo had one hit and two RBI, with three other players notching one hit each for Staten Island (4-7).

Goldey-Beacom opens a four-game series with D'Youville at Doyle Field on Friday in a single game, with first pitch at 2:00 pm.
