No. 23 Baseball Rolls to Two Victories Over Clarion

No. 23 Goldey-Beacom ended its second North Carolina trip once again by winning three out of four games, this time closing it with a doubleheader sweep of Clarion by scores of 9-1 and 9-0 in Cary.

The Lightning in game one got more outstanding pitching from Mouth Bethel, PA sophomore Kevin Dillon (2-0), who struck out five over six innings, allowing one run, no walks and four hits in facing just five batters above the minimum.

The offense had another productive outing, especially during a five-run fourth inning that gave GBC a 7-0 lead.  A pair of wild pitches plated junior Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) and freshman Bobby Stewart (Newark, DE) before junior Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) had an RBI groundout and senior Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) lined a two-run double.

Petrillo continued the onslaught with a two-run double in the top of the fifth to make it 9-0.  He had two hits and three RBI with Musey, Kolmansberger and senior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) getting two hits apiece.

Griffin Snyder permitted seven runs – six earned – and six hits over 3 2/3 innings for the Golden Eagles.

Game two saw more solid offense with the Lightning plating three runs in the last of the first for a 3-0 lead.  Petrillo scored on a wild pitch, Musey lifted a sacrifice fly and senior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) crossed home on an error.

Petrillo's sacrifice fly in the second and Walker's RBI groundout in the fifth made it 5-0 before two more runs came home in the seventh.  Senior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) continued his impressive start with an RBI single and Walker got a sacrifice fly.

GBC (6-2) ended the scoring in the eighth, when junior Calen Kampes (Colora, MD) had an RBI single and Johnson recorded another run-scoring single.

Moorestown, NJ junior Wyatt Atkinson (2-0) struck out four over five innings, allowing just three hits, and senior Karl Schmidt (Lincoln U., PA) notched six strikeouts over three frames.

Johnson rapped four hits to match his career best and has recorded a hit in seven of the Lightning's eight contests this year.  His 11 hits on the young season are second for the squad behind Miller's 14.

Petrillo went 3-for-3 with Miller adding two hits for Goldey-Beacom, which opened the trip with a 5-1 loss to Frostburg State before Saturday's 10-0 triumph over Kutztown.

Connor Booth had two hits for the Golden Eagles (1-8).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday visits No. 7 Millersville for a noon doubleheader that begins a four-game, weekend series.  The teams then will meet Sunday at Doyle Field in Hockessin for another noon twin-bill.
