No. 23 Baseball Handed 5-1 Loss by Frostburg State

Goldey-Beacom's first game of the season as a nationally ranked squad did not go as planned with the No. 23 team dropping a 5-1 contest to Frostburg State in Cary, NC.

A long rain delay and the shortening of a scheduled doubleheader to one game was quickly forgotten when senior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) blasted a solo homer in the top of the first inning.  It was his first long ball of the season and sixth career.

The Lightning (3-2) were hoping to continue getting solid medal on the ball, but the Bobcats pitchers had other ideas.  Jacob McDonald was solid over his six innings, striking out nine in allowing four hits and just the one run.  Jack Ray came and fanned seven over three scoreless frames, yielding one hit.

Frostburg State took the lead for good in the third when Cy Probst stroked a two-out, two-run double for a 2-1 margin.  He then scored on a wild pitch later in the frame for a two-run contest.

Randy Steen lined an RBI single in the sixth and Ben Wieman crossed home on a wild pitch later in the frame for the final.

Senior Jake Kelchner (Collegeville, PA) struck out four over three innings before junior Ryan Pozo (Fords, NJ) recorded a pair of strikeouts over five frames.

Steen, Probst and Jackson Schalick had two hits apiece for the Bobcats (1-3).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday faces Kutztown, beginning at 11:00 am in Cary, NC.
