Men’s Soccer Closes Regular Season With 6-4 Victory at Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom lowered the curtain on its regular season in emphatic style, netting three first-half goals in a 6-4 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Wilmington in Newark, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in the sixth minute used outstanding footwork to open the scoring.  Freshman Ogun Unal (Frankfurt, Germany) fed a great pass to junior Lucas Fernandes (Bel Horizonte, Brazil), who chipped one over the goalie from just outside the 18-yard box and scored for his second goal of the season.

The Lightning made it 2-0 in the 15th minute.  Unal again was the playmaker, getting a great ball to senior Nick Perez (Wilmington, DE) for an easy tap in and the latter's third career goal.

Senior Colby Niggebrugge (Middletown, DE) put the visitors up 3-0 in the 24th minute thanks to a sensational goal.  He took a corner kick from the right side and the ball curled into the back of the net for his third goal of the campaign.

Unal, junior Emanuel Bustos (Miami, FL) and freshman Sam Ball (Salisbury, MD) all scored in the second half for the Lightning.  Fernandes closed with three assists and now has 11 on the season, tying GBC Hall-of-Famer Matt DiGiacobbe for the program's fourth-best mark in one year.  The latter accomplished this in 2002.

This marks Goldey-Beacom's first victory over Wilmington since 2002 and its first result in the series since a 0-0 tie in 2005.  It also is the Lightning's first road win against the Wildcats.

Goldey-Beacom (7-11, 6-5 CACC) will be the seventh seed for the CACC Tournament, but its opponent will not be known until late Thursday night.  Please check the league website at caccathletics.org for updated information.
