Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball’s Unreal Season Heads to the CACC Tournament Following a 3-2 Victory at Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom continued one of the most remarkable turnarounds of any program in school history, clinching a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 3-2 triumph (25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-11) at Wilmington (DE) in Newark, DE.

In an amazing book with chapters still to be written, the Lightning (15-14, 8-8 CACC) have prospered under first-year coach Alexa Poss with success one only could dream of.  After only winning two matches in 2022 and just five sets last year, Goldey-Beacom is off to the CACC Tournament for just the second time since 2006 and first since 2017.

GBC is the No. 4 seed out of the South Division and will visit North Division champion Post on Tuesday at 6:00 pm in Waterbury, CT.  The winner goes to championship weekend next week in Lakewood, NJ.

In an incredible fifth set, the Lightning owned a 6-4 lead before scoring the next five points.  Sophomore Ngozi Nwosu (Brockport, MA) has provided stunning play of late and that extended into this run, recording the last two kills for an 11-4 margin.

The Wildcats (11-20, 6-10) would not disappear, recording the next six points in closing to 11-10.  Alex Serna was the key to it all with a kill, a block solo and two block assists.

However, Goldey-Beacom decided it was time to end things by scoring four of the next five points.  Senior Piper Nanouski (Chicago, IL) recorded a kill to make it 12-10, had two straight for a 14-11 margin and senior Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) ended it with a block solo.

Junior Giuliana Jaku (Frontin, Italy) simply was awesome, recording a season-best 26 kills to go with 15 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.  Nanouski recorded 16 kills with Nwosu adding 15, giving the latter 38 over her last three matches.

Freshman Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) had 28 digs, senior Claudia Camporro (Gijon, Spain) notched a career-best 26 digs with freshman Ada Koksal (Istanbul, Turkiye) adding 55 assists and 13 digs for her sixth double-double of the campaign.

Serna did everything she could for Wilmington with 15 kills, two block solos and 13 block assists.  Eliza Schneider recorded 15 kills, Karalyn Osborne notched 23 assists with Claudia Melendez adding 19 assists and 19 digs.

The road to the fifth started with Goldey-Beacom in the opening set showing great determination, rallying from a 20-17 deficit to end things on an 8-3 run.  Jaku closed the set with nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage.

Wilmington got things all square in the second thanks to 15 kills and just four errors for a .314 percentage.  Serna pounded five kills in the set and Schneider added four.

The third set saw things level at 17 all and a run was there for the taking.  It was the Lightning who responded, scoring the last eight points, for the match lead.  Jaku in that spurt again was a presence with three kills and Nwosu added two.

The Lightning in the fourth set were down 23-19, but did not give in.  They scored the next five points to take a 24-23 lead and set up match point with Nwosu recording three kills in that time.

However, Wilmington put down the next three points to extend the match.  Serna ended the stanza with a kill.
