Volleyball’s Turnaround Season Ends With 3-0 Setback at Post in the CACC Quarterfinals

Goldey-Beacom, which saw its season produce more adjectives that would make a thesaurus jealous, was handed a 3-0 loss (19-25, 14-25, 15-25) by Post in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Waterbury, CT.

The finale ends a beyond-remarkable season in which the expectations were darn-near zero, but the results were monumental and memorable.  Thanks to a complete change of everything under first-year coach Alexa Poss, Goldey-Beacom (15-15, 8-8 CACC) made the 2024 campaign a stunning one after the team only won two matches in 2022 and just five sets last season.

Entering the week as the fourth seed from the South Division, the Lightning were making just their second CACC Tournament appearance since 2006 and first since 2017.

The day started off great with the league making its all-conference announcements and the Lightning were well represented.  Senior middle blocker Caitlyn Burch (Mechanicsville, MD) was named first team, freshman libero Gaby Fernandez (Arecibo, PR) was tabbed second team and senior outside hitter Piper Nanouski (Chicago, IL) was picked third team.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening set trailed by as much as 12-3, but got it together in climbing within 19-17.  Nanouski did all she could in that span with three kills, junior Giuliana Jaku (Frontin, Italy) had two with Burch and freshman Angelica Febres (San Juan, PR) getting one apiece.

Nanouski closed the set with five kills, Jaku had three and Fernandez continued to be all over the place with six digs.

The Eagles had control of the second set, notching 11 kills and forcing the Lightning into seven errors.  Kristina Peric recorded four kills for Post with Sara Enright adding two.

Post finalized things in the third, getting 12 kills in the set with just two errors for a .345 percentage.  Enright notched four kills with Peric adding three.

Nanouski overall closed with 11 kills, ending her outstanding career fourth in team history with 973 kills and also finishing the year on a 12-match streak with at least 10 kills.  Her 387 on the season is the fifth-best mark in team history.

Fernandez recorded 19 digs to finish her season with 583, the second-best single-season total in team annals.    Freshman Ada Koksal (Istanbul, Turkiye) amassed 25 assists to end the year with 1,011, becoming only the second in team history to get at least 1,000 in one year and already putting herself seventh on the program's career list.

Jaku had six kills and nine digs with Burch getting five kills.

Peric was outstanding with 10 kills, Enright recorded nine, Maria Branco dished 22 assists and Alyssa Groves had 18 digs for Post (19-10, 13-3), which won the league's North Division.
