Women’s Tennis Reveals 2023 Fall Schedule

8/2/2023 12:00:00 AM

(2023 schedule)

A young lineup now experienced in playing collegiate tennis is what Goldey-Beacom sports and that will play a major factor in the team looking to regain its spot among the area's elite against what again will be a tough schedule.

The Lightning a season ago had eight newcomers on a squad that endured almost a complete turnover and, despite their youth, just missed qualifying for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament by one match.

GBC opens things September 12 at home against Molloy before league play starts four days later vs. Post, also at Delcastle Tennis Center.  Things continue at Delcastle on September 19 with a match against defending CACC champion Wilmington (DE).

The squad then hosts Chestnut Hill on September 23 before visiting Dominican (NY) on the 27th and Jefferson three days later.

The rotation for the second meetings in league play is the same.

The Wilmington match October 7 is part of the Homecoming and Lightning Family Weekend, which last year was rebranded.  The weekend's events include opportunities for alums to come back on campus to reunite with many friends and also see the many changes that many who continue to be part of the family help ignite.  It also will give an opportunity for parents to come on campus and spend time with their kids as part of an atmosphere filled with festivities and fun.

Conference play ends October 17 at home against Jefferson.

The top four teams go to the conference tournament, which will be at Delcastle.  The semifinals are October 20 and the final is the 21st with the league champion earning a berth into the spring's NCAA Tournament.

A major bright spot returning this season is sophomore Zehra Canbaz (Denizli, Turkey), who amassed a combined 12 victories last year that included seven at No. 2 singles.  An energetic competitor, she looks to duplicate the success that last season saw her attain winning streaks of four both in singles and doubles.

Junior Elizabeth Mova (Sevastopol, Ukraine) held the role playing at first singles and first doubles most of the season, displaying exceptional tenacity against many of the league's best.  She has a great deal of potential in making herself among the conference's elite and hopes to take a big step forward this season.

Junior Macy Hendin-Walker (Ipswich, England) is the most experienced player for the Lightning and has played a key role for the squad the last two seasons.  She combined for six victories last season and will compete for one of the many open roles as the team continues to find the perfect equation.

Goldey-Beacom continues to flourish under coach Bernard Flowers, who enters his third season.  A standout player in his day at John Jay College, Flowers has brought a strong mentality to the squad and that knowledge carries into his role as Delcastle's Director of Tennis Operations.
