Baseball Wins Twice to Force an Ultimate Game in the NCAA Tournament Regional

Goldey-Beacom cruised to a 14-2 victory over Queens (NY) and stayed alive in the championship round with a 7-5 triumph over Le Moyne at the NCAA Tournament's East Regional 2 in Newark, DE.

Goldey-Beacom and Le Moyne will play again Sunday at 1:00 pm, this time with a trip to the East Regional final against top-seeded Southern New Hampshire at stake.

Goldey-Beacom began things in a big way against Queens (NY) with three runs in the top of the second inning.  Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) drew a bases-loaded walk and Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) followed with a huge two-run single for a 3-0 lead.

The rout officially was on and continued into the fourth.  Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) lined an RBI single, Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) and Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) each drove in a run before Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) crushed a two-run, ground-rule double to make it 8-0.

Walker continued his outstanding season by getting a sacrifice fly in the seventh and a solo homer in the ninth for a 12-0 score.  Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) has been red hot the entire week and that was on display in the ninth, when he crushed a two-run homer for a 14-run margin.

Sicklerville, NJ senior Anthony DiMartino (5-3) left no doubt in getting his 14th career victory, tying Mitch Guerrieri (2018-22) for the most in program history.  He allowed just two runs over nine innings and notched two strikeouts, working out of many jams to keep the Knights at bay.

DiMartino already owned the career strikeouts mark, bumping his total to 169.

Miller simply was outstanding in getting four hits with Kampes, DiSabatino and Petrillo notching three apiece.  All helped the Lightning end with 19 hits, tying their season high from March 30 against Alliance.

Miller's stupendous play was not limited to the first game.  After Kampes singled and Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) walked in the first inning against Le Moyne, Miller demolished one to left field for a three-run homer and a 3-0 GBC lead.

Goldey-Beacom looked to continue that momentum, but unfortunately Brody Kenseton still plays for Le Moyne.  After blasting three home runs in Friday's matchup between the same schools, Keneseton took one deep to left in the fifth for a three-run shot and a 3-3 tie.

Nick Nevin started that rally with a two-out walk and Dewey Roden followed with a single to left-center field.

The Lightning rallied in the sixth to restore the three-run cushion.  DiSabatino lined an RBI single down the left-field line, scored on a ground-rule double from Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) and Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) crossed home on an error.

Le Moyne cut things to 6-5 in the last of the frame when Drew Carroll took his turn in home-run derby, launching a two-run shot.  GBC got one of them back in the top of the seventh when DiSabatino lifted a sacrifice fly, scoring the speedy Walker.

Walker also made several sensational plays with his glove at third base, showing what got him to be named first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference this season and second team two years ago.

Lincoln U., PA junior Karl Schmidt (4-0) simply pitched the game of his life out of the bullpen, holding the Dolphins to just two runs and three hits over 3 2/3 innings.  Miller and Kolmansberger notched two hits apiece.

Carroll and Zach Brush each had two hits for Le Moyne.

Goldey-Beacom (37-19) is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance since the program's 2017 reinstatement.  The campaign has produced a school record for most wins with Jake Kelchner, Johnny Kampes and Kyle Walker named first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in addition to Christian Petrillo getting tabbed second team.
