Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball’s Season Ends With Tough 6-5 Loss to Le Moyne at the NCAA Tournament’s East Regional

With a trip to the NCAA Tournament's East Region final at stake, a better game could not have been played by both sides and unfortunately it was Goldey-Beacom which came out on the wrong end of a 6-5 contest against Le Moyne in Newark, DE.

Le Moyne in the top of the first inning almost copied Goldey-Beacom's playbook from Friday's nightcap, in which Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) cracked a three-run homer in the frame.  This time, Dewey Roden took his turn with a two-run blast to right field for a 2-0 lead.

The Lightning in the last of the frame closed to 2-1.  Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored when Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) laced a single up the middle.

GBC continued its picket fence in the second for a 2-2 tie.  Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) hustled out an infield single, reached second on a sacrifice from Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) and scored when Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) hit a double off the right-field wall.

Roden struck again in the third for a 3-2 Dolphins lead.  Nick Nevins lined a one-out double down the right-field line and scored when Roden doubled to right.

Miller in the last of the third continued what simply was an outstanding regional for him, launching an opposite-field home run to right-center field for a 3-3 tie.  He ended the regional batting .526 (10-for-19) with a double, three home runs and seven RBI.

Roden got RBI number four in the top of the fifth, stroking a single up the middle for a 4-3 Le Moyne cushion.  It could have been much worse with runners on second and third, but reliever Dylan Bittle (Media, PA) shut it down by getting Zach Brush on a massive groundout to first.

The Dolphins desperately looked for runs again after getting runners on second and third, which in the eight they capitalized.  Benji Ries, after he singled and took third on Adam Sullivan's double, scored on a wild pitch for a 5-3 game.  Lukas Egenhauser then dropped a sacrifice bunt to plate Sullivan for a three-run contest.

GBC kept everyone checking their pulse in the last of the eighth by scoring two runs for a 6-5 deficit.  Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) doubled, Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) singled and both scored when Kolmansberger had a huge single up the middle.

Eric Swiencicki was a major story for Le Moyne, striking out six over 3 2/3 innings in giving his side everything it could ask.  Jed Boyle got the last four outs in heart-stopping fashion that finally allowed everyone to exhale.

Le Moyne (34-19) advances to the East Regional final and will play top-seeded Southern New Hampshire with a trip to the NCAA Division II World Series on the line.  Game one of the best-of-three series in Hooksett, NH is Friday at 3:00 pm with game two and a potential decider on Saturday.

Nevins went 4-for-4 with Roden adding three hits for the Dolphins.

Nate Miller (Mechanicsburg, PA) was outstanding out of the bullpen for the Lightning with three strikeouts over two innings and Luke Drzemiecki (Murrieta, CA) tossed a more than impressive ninth inning to keep it a one-run game.

Goldey-Beacom (37-20) ends an outstanding campaign in which it was making its second NCAA Tournament appearance since the program's 2017 reinstatement.  The campaign has produced a school record for most wins with Jake Kelchner, Johnny Kampes and Kyle Walker named first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in addition to Christian Petrillo getting tabbed second team.
