Jake Kelchner Shows the Way for Baseball in 4-3 Victory Over Felician at the NCAA Tournament

Junior Jake Kelchner (Collegeville, PA) simply was outstanding and benefitted from his team's big fifth inning for Goldey-Beacom, which notched a 4-3 triumph over Felician at the NCAA Tournament in Newark, DE.

Kelchner (7-2) was awesome in showing masterful control, striking out seven over nine innings.  He retired nine straight batters from the fourth through seventh innings and notched three perfect frames.

Kelchner becomes the first pitcher in team history to record seven victories in a year and the first to throw nine innings in two different games.  He also has won his last six starts.

Felician broke the ice with three runs in the top of the second inning.  Anthony Lamar and Chris Fernandez drew walks before Julian Uejima brought them both home with a double down the left-field line.  Haiden Walters then had a grounder that turned into an error, scoring Uejima.

The Lightning responded with four runs in the last of the fifth for a 4-3 lead.  Darin Miller gave the squad a huge lift with an RBI single, Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to chase starter Mike Caldon, Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) roped the tying single and Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) provided the lead with a sacrifice fly.

Goldey-Beacom, seeded second in the East Region, now moves on to the winners bracket and will face third-seeded Le Moyne on Friday at 7:00 pm.  Felician will face Queens (NY) in an elimination game at 3:30 pm.

Goldey-Beacom is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance since the program's 2017 reinstatement.  The campaign has produced a school record for most wins with Kelchner, Kampes and Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) named first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in addition to Petrillo getting tabbed second team.
