Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Strengthens Its Hold on Second Place in the CACC South with Doubleheader Sweep of Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom, in a crucial Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division doubleheader, showed it can win a close game with a 6-5 victory over Jefferson and showed it can gain a huge lead early with a 17-4 rout in game two at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

GBC (27-13, 12-5 CACC) now holds a 2 1/2 game lead over Jefferson (20-18, 9-7) for second place in the division and is just one game behind Wilmington (13-4) for first.  The top three teams advance to the CACC Tournament with the one seed getting a first-round bye and the two seed hosting the No. 3 seed in a best-of-three series.

The 27 victories also tied the school record, accomplished last season.

The Lightning in the second inning of game one plated four runs to eradicate a 2-0 deficit.  Junior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) was just getting started with a three-run double for the lead and scored on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) for a 4-2 margin.

Jefferson got one in the third on Justin Espinal's bases-loaded walk before GBC plated two in the fifth for a 6-3 margin.  Petrillo scored on a wild pitch and senior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) crossed home on a double play.

The Rams got two in the seven on an error off the bat of Matt Vita and a bases-loaded walk to Alex Gonzalez.  It remained that way into the ninth, when sophomore Alex Hinton (Wilmington, DE) was called on to shut the door and got the side in order for his third save of the year, becoming the third Lightning pitcher to accomplish this.

Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) had three hits and fellow junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) rapped two.

Collegeville, PA junior Jake Kelchner (3-2) got his third victory in his last four starts, notching a season-best eight strikeouts over six innings.

Chris McLean amassed three hits for Jefferson.

Game two was no contest, beginning with the Lightning getting five runs in the first for a 5-0 lead.  Junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) had the key blow with a two-run double.

The game's fate was sealed during a nine-run second inning for a 14-0 lead, which included Miller cracking a grand slam to straightaway center field.  Kampes homered off the scoreboard in left field and added an RBI single in the frame.

Kampes' 14th career home run puts him in a tie with senior teammate senior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) for fourth in team annals.

Walker had three hits with Johnson and Kampes getting three RBI apiece.  Miller closed the doubleheader with seven RBI.

Wilmington, DE junior Justin Jump (4-3) struck out six over six innings, allowing just four runs – three earned – and six hits over six innings.

Marquise Wood had two hits for the Rams.

Goldey-Beacom is ranked sixth in the East Region, according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and Jefferson received votes.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday visits Bloomfield for a noon doubleheader in Newark, NJ.
