Baseball Splits a Pair From Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom received great all-around play in an enthralling 5-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Wilmington before it was handed a 12-2 loss in the nightcap at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Game one once again witnessed the great play of senior catcher Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD), who continues to be one of the area's most complete players.  This began in the top of the second inning by throwing out Adrian Jimenez at second base on a caught stealing and continued into the fourth, when he blasted a leadoff homer for a 1-0 GBC lead.

It was his 13th career home run, putting him in a tie for fifth place in team history.

Kampes was not done on the defensive side by once again getting a caught stealing at second to end the inning, this time throwing out Jack McDonald in the sixth.

It remained 1-0 with one out in the eighth when the game's most critical play took place with JJ Killen at third base.  McDonald flied out to senior right fielder Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) and Killen looked to score the tying run.  But Lindsey's throw was on target and Killen ran into Kampes for the third out.

GBC (22-13, 7-5 CACC) left no doubt with four runs in the last of the frame.  Sophomore Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) scored on an error and Lindsey crushed a three-run homer for his 14th career long ball, putting him fourth in team annals.

Collegeville, PA junior Jake Kelchner (2-2) pitched great, striking out six over eight scoreless frames in facing just five batters above the minimum.

The Wildcats (20-13, 12-2) could not take advantage of a great effort from Kyle Maxwell (3-2), who struck out four and allowed four runs – one earned – and four hits over 7 1/3 innings.  McDonald and Killen had two hits apiece.

Game two produced little suspense, but some intrigue as the squad's played to a 2-2 tie through four innings.  McDonald lofted a solo homer in the first for a 1-0 margin and junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) had a solo blast of his own in the third for a 2-1 deficit.

But the Wildcats plated 10 runs over the last three innings for the final.  Those highlights included Killen's two-run double in the fifth, Erik Grady's two-run single in the sixth and Eddie Parry's two-run sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Killen had four hits, McDonald went 3-for-3 with Grady adding two hits.  Matt Boyko (3-0) struck out five over six innings, allowing two runs and four hits.

Goldey-Beacom is ranked sixth in the East Region and Wilmington is ninth, both according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday battles Felician in a doubleheader, beginning at noon in Lyndhurst, NJ.
