Baseball Splits a Pair With No. 16 Millersville

Goldey-Beacom rallied in game two for a 4-2 victory over 16th-ranked Millersville after dropping a 15-9 contest in the opener at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning in the fourth inning of game two eradicated a 1-0 lead with two runs.  Junior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA), senior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) and junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) all walked to load the bases before junior Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) got the first two home with an RBI single to center.

That margin grew to 4-1 in the fifth when Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) dropped a perfect squeeze bunt to score fellow sophomore Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) and Kampes added a sacrifice fly.

The pitching more than held up with Sicklerville, NJ senior Anthony DiMartino (1-0) striking out three over five innings, allowing just one run and four hits.  Junior Karl Schmidt (Lincoln U., PA) came on in relief and got the save with five strikeouts over two innings.

Petrillo closed with two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games.  Junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) ripped a double to give him a 12-game hitting streak and a hit in 30 of his last 31 contests.

Jimmy Losh had two hits and Kris Pirozzi struck out five over two relief innings for the Marauders.

Millersville in game one scored five times in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead, keyed by Matthew Williams' grand slam.  GBC rallied for five in the bottom half with RBI hits from Walker, Miller, Kampes and Johnson.  The latter allowed Miller to score on an error to tie the game.

But the Marauders continued to play home run derby during the contest.  Keegan Soltis blasted a two-run shot in the fourth for an 8-5 lead and Thomas Caufield added a solo blast in the fifth for a four-run margin.

Senior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) gave the Lightning hope in the fifth when his two-run homer got his squad within 9-7.  But Sam Morris cracked a two-run blast in the sixth and Williams made it a seven-RBI game with his three-run shot in the seventh for a 15-8 score.

Johnson ended the contest 4-for-4 with Petrillo also getting two hits for the Lightning (8-5), who are ranked sixth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll.

Logan Layton and Nate Young each struck out three out of the bullpen for Millersville (15-4).

Goldey-Beacom next weekend faces Queens (NY) in a four-game series.  The first two games will be Saturday at Doyle Field, beginning at noon.
