Baseball Earns a Split with Post



Goldey-Beacom drove in four runs in the fifth inning of game one to beat Post 4-2, before falling 14-5 in game two in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
 
Post opened the scoring in the fourth inning off a home run from Matt Goehrig, and second run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) lit the spark for the Lightning in the fifth with a double to the right side. Sophomore Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, NJ) drive Johnson in with sacrifice bunt, before a single from junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) scored Vitale to tie the score at 2-2.
 
Junior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) reached base via a walk before making his way back to home plate by a throwing error and a wild pitch, scoring Walker in the process to secure a 4-2 victory.
 
Walker had one hit and one RBI, with seniors Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) and Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) and Johnson all ending with a hit. Junior Jake Kelchner (Collegeville, PA) recorded his first win of the season and sophomore Alex Hinton (Wilmington, DE) got the save, striking out two over one inning.
 
Michael Pavelchak had two hits and Goerhig had one hit and one RBI. Goehrig was dealt the loss, striking out six over five innings.
 
Trailing 6-0 after the first inning, the Lightning tallied two runs themselves in the first with homeruns from sophomore Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) and Walker. A third run was driven in in the second off a double from sophomore Nick Harkins (Newark, DE) to bring the score to 6-3.
 
Post drove in two more runs in the fifth to further the lead, but the Lightning countered back with a grounded-out RBI from Walker for the Lightning to trail 8-4.
 
Evan Cornwell singled down the left field line to bring in two more runs for Post, before Jimmy Brennan cleared the bases with a four-RBI homerun to extend the lead to 14-4.
 
The final Lightning run came from freshman Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ), who reached by an RBI-double from sophomore Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ).
 
Walker continues to be dominant at the plate, extending his hitting streak to 23 games with his homerun, to go with two RBI. Harkins also had two hits for GBC (15-9).
 
Brennan had three hits and five RBI and Goehrig ended with two hits and four RBI for Post (14-12).
 
Goldey-Beacom host Molloy on Wednesday in a single game matchup beginning at 3:00 pm in Hockessin, DE.
