Baseball Claims Two-Game Sweep over No. 10 Southern New Hampshire

Goldey-Beacom found itself on top of No. 10 Southern New Hampshire with a 6-4 game one win and a thrilling 7-6 victory in game two to claim three games of a four-game series at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Game one saw the Lightning strike early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning off singles from senior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) and junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE).

Southern New Hampshire held the Lightning to the single run until the third, when back-to-back hits, a double from sophomore Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, NJ) and a single from fellow sophomore Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) drove in a run for a 2-0 lead.

But back-to-back home runs from Nick Schwartz and Cam Caraher tied up the score before the Penmen took the lead off a sacrifice fly from Danniel Rivera.

The Lightning in the fifth inning took away the energy from the Penmen with bases loaded. Junior Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) did his part at the plate, connecting for a single to drive in Kampes, followed by a two-run single from senior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) to lift the Lightning to a 5-3 lead.

Kampes' single in the sixth drove in Petrillo for a final run for the Lightning. The Penmen attempted to chip at the Lightning's lead with RBI single from Rivera, but the Lightning caught out Rivera with a huge fielding play from junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) to get the ball back into the infield to get the out at second base for a final 6-4 score.

Sophomore Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA), Petrillo and Kampes totaled two hits each. Media, PA junior Dylan Bittle (1-1) recorded the win, striking out five over three innings.

Rivera and Jorge Burgos rapped two hits apiece.

Game two saw the Penmen take a 5-0 lead over four innings with hits from Crisitian Mercedes, Rivera and Schwartz.

Despite the deficit, Kampes began the Lightning rally with a two-run homer in the fifth before various errors by the Penmen gave the Lightning a 6-5 lead in the sixth.

The seventh inning saw the tension rise for both teams after Michael LaRocca shot a single to right field to tie up the game at 6-6.

Freshman pinch-hitter Anthony Charles (Mullica Hill, NJ) more than did his part at the plate, connecting for a single. Lindsey Jr. moved Charles to second base before scoring by a throwing error by the shortstop to give the Lightning a 7-6 win.

Kampes finished with one hit and two RBI, and six other players closed with a hit each for GBC (13-8).  One being Walker, who extended his hitting streak to 20 games.

Rivera notched two hits for Southern New Hampshire (11-7).

Goldey-Beacom opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday, facing Alliance in a single game at home with the first pitch at 2:00 pm.
