Baseball Powers Its Way to Split Against Mansfield

Goldey-Beacom slugged its way to a convincing 10-0 victory over Mansfield in game two of its doubleheader after a 19-8 loss in the opener at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC.

Goldey-Beacom, ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll, in game two displayed some two-out magic in the top of the first inning.  Senior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) provided the highlight by lining a two-run double to right-center field, scoring sophomore Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) and junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE).

The two-out offense in the second inning began with the bases empty.  Sophomores Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, NJ) and Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) each singled before Walker stroked a two-run single to center that gave GBC a 4-0 cushion.

The offensive fun continued into the top of the fourth inning with four runs for an 8-0 margin.  Junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) hustled home from second on a wild pitch, Petrillo lined an RBI single and Walker scored when his grounder turned into a two-error, little league home run.

Junior Dante DiSabatino (Middletown, DE) had an RBI single in the fifth and drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for the final.

Pitching also was the story with Swoyersville, PA junior Tommy Federici (2-0) striking out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits.  Freshman Kevin Dillon (Mount Bethel, PA) tossed a perfect seventh inning, striking out two.

Scott Poulson (0-1) allowed seven runs – six earned – and seven hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Mounties (2-3).

Down 6-0 entering the last of the third inning in game one, Goldey-Beacom plated three runs to halve the deficit.  Petrillo and Walker each drew one-out walks and junior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) got them all home with a two-out, three-run homer to left that made it 6-3.

The Lightning (7-1) got three more runs in the fifth for a 6-6 tie.  Miller continued his unbelievable play with an RBI single, Kampes drove one in on a fielder's choice and senior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) added a run-scoring single.

But the Mounties got four in the top of the seventh for a 10-6 lead.  Jacob Houtz scored on a throwing error, Brittain Shander stroked a two-run single and Jeffrey Coakley crossed home on a wild pitch.

The margin grew to 16-6 in the top of the eighth, but sophomore Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) got two of those back with a two-run homer to left-center field for his first career long ball.

Miller had two hits and four RBI with Walker and Lindsey Jr. each getting two hits.  Walker now has a hit in his last six games and 24 of his last 25 contests dating to last season.

Joseph Gleason (1-0) got the victory in relief, striking out two over three innings despite yielding two runs and four hits.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is off due to impending bad weather expected in the Research Triangle.  The squad on Sunday ends its North Carolina stay with a 1:00 pm game against Kutztown.
