Baseball Records 6-2 Win Over Frostburg State

Goldey-Beacom, despite a rain delay, came out on top with a 6-2 win over Frostburg state at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC.

The first three innings were scoreless for both teams. For the Lightning, junior Jake Kelchner (Collegeville, PA) led the way from the mound by holding the Bobcats without a hit and recording seven strikeouts over three innings before the rain started.

In the top of the fourth, the Lightning rallied in four runs to start their lead. Back-to-back doubles from sophomore Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) followed by junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) notched the first run. Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) stepped up to the plate and drove a single to bring in Kampes, followed by junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ), who placed a double in right field. Johnson scored his run on a wild pitch by the Bobcats.

The Bobcats, with runners on first and second, tallied one run in the fourth. Another came in the fifth off a double to left field to trail 4-2.

In the seventh, Kampes stepped up to the plate with junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE), who reached on a single, and Kolmansberger on second and third base. Kampes reached on a fielder's choice, allowing another Lightning run from Walker and a further lead at 5-2.

The final Lightning run came from sophomore Matt Benner (Souderton, PA) in the eighth, who reached third base on a series of errors by the Bobcats. Another wild pitch proved costly for the Bobcats, allowing Benner to score for a 6-2 win.

Lindsey Jr. recorded three hits with Kolmansberger, the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Player of the Week, and Johnson tallying two apiece. Junior Karl Schmidt (Lincoln U., PA) notched the win for GBC (6-0).

Frostburg State (3-1) finished with only three hits and 14 strikeouts in 30 at-bats on the game as a result of the Lightning's pitching.

Goldey-Beacom is set to face Mansfield on Friday in a 12:45pm doubleheader in Cary, NC.
