Baseball Claims Dominant 10-0 Win Over Mercy

Goldey-Beacom closed its North Carolina trip with a dominant 10-0 win over Mercy at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC.

Strong play and the player to watch came from the mound, with Wilmington, DE native Justin Jump (2-0) holding the Mavericks to just one hit and striking out seven ovee eight innings.

After three innings, the Lightning began tallying their runs. Junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) stepped up to the plate with two on base and connected for a single to drive in sophomores Matt Benner (Sauderton, PA) and Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) for a 2-0 lead. A third run came from Walker off a double from sophomore Braden Kolmansberger, (Lewisberry, PA).

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Kolmansberger once again stepped to the plate and did not disappoint with a single to left that scored Petrillo and Benner.

Stolen bases by Kolmansberger and Walker gave senior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) an opportunity for another run.  His single brought in Walker for a 6-0 Lightning lead.

The Lightning added one more in the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Benner to bring in junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ). The same play would happen two innings later by Walker to drive in Nick Harkins (Newark, DE), pushing the lead to 8-0.

The final Lightning runs came from Johnson, off a single from Benner and Harkins, who took advantage of a Mavericks error for a final 10-0 triumph.

Walker and Kolmansberger finished with two hits and three RBI apiece, with Johnson, Benner, and junior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) each adding two hits each.

Joseph Gonzalez and Nolan Giblin totaled one hit each for the Mavericks (1-3).

Goldey-Beacom return to Cary, NC on Friday for a doubleheader against Mansfield, with the first pitch at 2:00 pm.
