Baseball Upends Chowan, 16-7, in its Season Opener

Goldey-Beacom was able to get its season underway seven days earlier than expected and with that came its first victory, 16-7 over Chowan at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

A tight contest early swung the Lightning's way in the fourth inning, when sophomore Christian Petrillo (New Brunswick, NJ) in his first game with the squad lined a three-run double for a 5-2 lead.

The margin shrunk to 6-4 entering the last of the sixth before Goldey-Beacom exploded for six runs.  Junior Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly, Petrillo scored on a wild pitch, sophomore Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) crossed home on an error, junior Darin Miller (Mifflinburg, PA) lined an RBI single in his first game with the squad, senior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) scored on a fielder's choice and junior Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) added an RBI single.

Chowan got one back in the top of the seventh for a 12-5 margin, but GBC tacked on four more in the last of the frame for an 11-run lead.  Miller stroked a two-run single and senior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) followed with a two-run single of his own.

The Vegas Gold and Navy Blue seemed to be a good fit for Petrillo, who went 4-for-4 as a debutante with three RBI in helping his squad amass 15 hits.  Miller recorded three hits and three RBI with Lindsey Jr. getting three RBI.

Wilmington, DE junior Justin Jump (1-0) pitched great in his four scheduled innings as a starter, striking out three and permitting just two runs and two hits.  Senior Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) struck out two over two innings, yielding two unearned runs and two hits.

Aidan Feather and Caleb Karie had two hits apiece with Tyler West and Warren Bailey getting two RBI each for the Hawks (0-4).  Shane Rademacher (0-1) struck out five over five innings, but permitted six runs – five earned – and seven hits.

Goldey-Beacom returns to action next Friday with a noon doubleheader against Le Moyne, which starts a four-game trip in Cary, NC.
