Basketball Teams Gets Two on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll

12/4/2023 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom last week opened play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with juniors Jenissa Varela (Ledyard, CT) and Ayshion Centeno (Pleasantville, NJ) each making their sport's Weekly Honor Roll.

Varela scored 17 points to go with three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block Wednesday against regionally ranked Holy Family.

Seeing her play flourish in the early going at point guard, Varela is taking advantage of her extended minutes and helping the obvious upswing of the team.  Scoring in double figures four times this season, Varela is 30th in the league with 8.4 points per game and third with an .885 free throw percentage.

Centeno scored 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting with four steals, three rebounds and two assists in Goldey-Beacom's 90-66 victory Wednesday over Holy Family.

Seeing a greater role in the Lightning's offense, Centeno has been a scoring machine of late by averaging 17.3 points over his last four games by shooting 62 percent (26-of-42) from the field.  He is 16th in the CACC with 14.0 points per contest, 12th with a .467 three-point percentage and 21st with 10 steals.

The women's team returns to action Tuesday at Bowie State for a 5:00 pm game.  The men's squad is home Wednesday against Lincoln (PA), beginning at 6:00 pm.
