Men's Soccer Notches Huge 2-1 Victory Against Caldwell; Clinches Spot in CACC Tournament

Goldey-Beacom clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a huge 2-1 victory against Caldwell at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field in Wilmington, DE.

The first half saw all of the action with all three goals coming within 14 minutes of each other.

The Lightning first struck in the eighth minute after senior Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil) cut off a pass between two Caldwell players and fired the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.

Junior Emanuel Bustos (Miami, FL) lifted the Lightning to a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later after winning a 50/50 ball toward the halfway line. Bustos found the bottom right corner after driving forward for a 15-yard shot.

Three minutes later, Caldwell cut into the Lightning's lead after Murilo DeOliveira found Alex Spencer off a corner to close the half 2-1.

Both teams had a number of chances to increase the score in the second half, but the match was finalized at 2-1.

Coimbra closed with five shots, Bustos added two and freshman Aeddan Jones (Chester, England) played solidly between the posts, notching five saves for GBC (6-8-2, 4-4-2 CACC).

Andre Vieira and Israel Dos Santos Neto had three shots apiece, and Kevin Sabadin had five saves for Caldwell (9-5-1, 5-5-1).

GBC clinches a spot in the CACC Tournament by virtue of holding a 2-0-1 record against the three teams it potentially could tie at season's end (Georgian Court, Holy Family and Chestnut Hill).  The squad is at 14 points and is tied with Georgian Court for seventh place with the top eight teams advancing.

Goldey-Beacom host Wilmington (DE) on Wednesday in the regular-season finale, beginning at 3:30 pm at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field.
