Women’s Soccer Handed 2-1 Loss at Bloomsburg

Goldey-Beacom is past years has played tough against Bloomsburg and today was no exception, but the former was dealt a tough 2-1 loss in Bloomsburg, PA.

The teams battled early and it remained a stalemate before the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.  Ellie Rowe won a 50/50 ball roughly 30 yards from the net and lofted a high shot, just sneaking it under the crossbar.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the 52nd minute off a set piece.  Kyle Schwab took a free kick roughly 40 yards from the goal and Nicole Varano headed it home.

The Lightning fought to within 2-1 in the 82nd minute.  Sophomore Jenna Campagna (Middletown, DE) got the ball, patiently dribbled around the defense and scored inside the left post for her first collegiate goal.

But it was not enough as Bloomsburg, which received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll, held on in a contest which it owned a 16-7 shots edge.

Alyssa Ruggeri (Hockessin, DE) and Alexa Pacheco (Santo Domingo, DR) had two shots apiece and fellow sophomore Nikki Cashin (Ridley, PA) recorded a career-best eight saves for the Lightning (0-2).

Varano and Campbell Power each had four shots and Riley Spingler made two saves for the Huskies (2-0).

"Even though they were 2-0 up on us, we held our ground and stayed connected as a team," freshman Mariah McQueen (Baltimore, MD) said.

"It was great to finish strong and put one in the back of the net." freshman Kaitlyn Nolan (Central Valley, NY) said.

"Traveling to BU is never an easy assignment," head coach Dan Frick said.  "This is one of the top D2 programs in the country and we proved today that we can compete with anyone in the country."

Goldey-Beacom on Friday visits Saint Anselm for a 3:00 pm match in Manchester, NH.
