Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Andrew Shearer Hosts Fifth Annual One Mile an Hour Run to Benefit Mental Health Awareness

6/20/2022 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom cross country and track & field coach Andrew Shearer hosted the fifth annual One Mile an Hour Run, benefitting the Mental Health Association in Delaware, with the return to an in-person event at Appoquinimink High School.

The run once again was a success with 1,114 miles either walked or run, raising $4,595.  The event, which the last two years was virtual, also saw 12 current or former Goldey-Beacom College staff, professors and student-athletes.

A 2018 article from the News Journal on the event that featured Shearer and his daughter, Aubrey, can be found by clicking here.

All money raised from the event went to the Mental Health Association of Delaware for teen and veteran suicide prevention programs.  After five years, the event has raised $22,500 with over 4,500 miles being trekked.

The Mental Health Association in Delaware (MHA) was incorporated in 1932 as the Delaware State Society for Mental Hygiene.  In 1951 the Society's name was changed to the Mental Health Association in Delaware.  The objectives of the MHA are to offer a spectrum of outreach activities encouraging Delaware's citizens to gain awareness of and to get help for depression and anxiety disorders.  They can be found at www.mhainde.org.

Shearer took over as the College's cross country coach in 2016 and was the first coach of the track & field programs, which began in 2019.  The women's track & field squad in 2022 ended sixth at the CACC Championship for a second straight year and got a huge boost with freshman Karla Chardon winning the javelin with a provisional qualifying distance for the NCAA Championship.  The men's unit closed fifth and continues to see a multitude of different athletes scoring, showing the team's overall balance.

One of the department's most liked people, his affable personality and ability to work great with everyone has permeated throughout his programs.  This played a huge role in the cross country teams combining for three CACC Sportsmanship Awards.

Shearer spent three seasons as head coach at Middletown High School, leading the team workouts in addition to interaction with both the Delaware state association and the school's athletic department.  He also was an assistant coach at Red Lion Christian Academy from 2010-11, leading all working and individual training.

Shearer also serves as coach for the Middletown Athletic Club's Couch to 5K Program, is an advisor for the Healthy Kids Running Series in Middletown and is both secretary and treasurer of the Middletown Athletic Club.  He has been Level I certified in coaching by the U.S. Track & Field Association since 2013.
